Module 3. Cultural communication and strategies in international research and educational projects

  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) serves as a global hub for the development of education, science and culture, using a variety of strategies to promote cultural communication. It organises multifaceted projects that include educational initiatives, research and cultural exchange programmes. To this end, UNESCO uses various strategies, including heritage preservation campaigns, educational programmes and platforms for intercultural dialogue. UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites protect culturally significant sites, while literacy programmes and teacher training initiatives increase access to education. In addition, UNESCO promotes joint research projects, enabling cross-border cooperation in addressing global challenges. Cultural communication is fostered through initiatives such as International Jazz Day and the Creative Cities Network, which promote artistic expression and intercultural dialogue.

  • The Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research (SIETAR) has its origins in the post-World War II era, when scholars, educators and practitioners recognised the urgent need to bridge cultural divides for peace and prosperity. Initially formed as a small group of professionals exchanging ideas, SIETAR has grown to become a dynamic international organisation with centres around the world. Its history is marked by a commitment to promoting intercultural understanding through innovative approaches to education, training and research. Through conferences, seminars and publications, SIETAR promotes the exchange of knowledge and the development of intercultural competence skills. The Society promotes cultural communication through initiatives such as intergroup dialogue sessions, cultural immersion experiences and virtual exchange programmes. By embracing diverse perspectives and fostering empathy, SIETAR is developing a more inclusive and interconnected global community, promoting mutual respect and cooperation across cultures.
