Module 1. Strategic and crisis management for university leaders.

Crisis

Organizational crises can strike like a sudden storm, threatening a company’s reputation, finances, and even its future.  For decades, researchers have analyzed crises and how organizations manage them, uncovering valuable insights. However, this research has often been fragmented, hindering our understanding of the bigger picture.

Crisis Management: An Introduction and Overview

This lecture is about crisis management. The speaker, Marcus Ryland, introduces different types of crisis, outlines key characteristics of a crisis situation, and explores the crisis management process. He also discusses the link between crisis management and strategic management.

The lecture starts with the definition of crisis. A crisis is a rare and unusual event that threatens public security and well-being. It is characterized by ambiguity of cause and effect and means of resolution. The speaker mentioned the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown as an example of a crisis.

The lecture then explores different types of crisis. Crises can be categorized by origin (internal or external) and cause (natural/technical or human/organizational). The speaker uses Enron as an example of an organizational crisis and Chernobyl as an example of a technical crisis.

The video outlines the different phases of crisis management, which include mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The speaker also details the four types of crises: natural, confrontational, malice, and human-made disasters.

Crisis management is important because it helps organizations to minimize the damage caused by a crisis and to recover more quickly. Public relations also plays a vital role in crisis management, as it helps to shape the public’s perception of the organization during a crisis.
