To successfully manage the educational and developmental process for international students, it is essential to recognize that upon entering a university, they find themselves in a social, linguistic, and cultural environment that is unfamiliar to them, to which they must adapt. Facilitating the successful adaptation of international students promotes their faster integration into the student community and facilitates the learning and educational process.
According to scholars, one of the most important conditions for the successful sociocultural adaptation of international students to a new educational environment is the organization of interpersonal interaction and mutual understanding between faculty and students, as well as among students representing different cultures within a group, department, or university. The next condition, inextricably linked to the previous one, is the inclusion of international students in practical intercultural communication activities.
The process of adaptation to a new sociocultural environment takes place both within the framework of academic activities and during extracurricular events, which helps accelerate this process and also develops linguistic and sociocultural competence.
Researchers studying the adaptation of international students most often identify three groups of adaptation challenges: academic, i.e., related to the learning process; individual, related to personality traits; and sociocultural, related to the conditions of the new social environment, which are intensively studied and successfully applied in the practice of teaching international students at universities. According to scholars, the most significant psychological challenges for international students are:
- difficulties associated with adjusting to life in a new climate, unfamiliar living conditions, and the need to adapt to new norms and traditions of behavior and interaction with others;
- frequent manifestations of ethnocultural stereotypes and prejudices, including in the form of everyday nationalism and racism in the regions where they study;
- diverse and complex, often unpredictable situations of a sociocultural, academic, and everyday nature that give rise to social and psychological difficulties and lead to the inability to fulfill personally meaningful motivations, as well as emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems, and sometimes to frustration;
- maladaptive reactions that lead to a deterioration in well-being, increased anxiety, a pronounced sense of alienation from the study group, intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts, and, as a result, a decline in academic performance, loss of interest, and a sense of meaning in educational and professional activities.
The vast majority of international students face numerous challenges upon arriving in Ukraine, ranging from physiological difficulties (adjusting to the climate and cuisine) to social and psychological ones (adapting to living conditions, behavioral norms, and academic requirements). The most challenging aspect of adaptation is academic life, due to the need to achieve a high level of proficiency in Ukrainian—sufficient to acquire professionally relevant knowledge and skills. Most international students consider their proficiency in Ukrainian (or Russian) sufficient for everyday communication but insufficient for the academic process. The task of the higher education institution during this challenging period for students is to help them adapt to the new learning environment as quickly and successfully as possible and integrate into the student body.
The integration of the Ukrainian higher education system into global trends contributes to the development of international ties and intercultural communication. The internationalization of the higher education system requires psychological and pedagogical support, as well as sociocultural and psychological adaptation throughout the entire period of international students’ studies in Ukraine.
Thus, the adaptation of international students to the educational environment of a Ukrainian higher education institution is a complex phenomenon, the success of which is determined by multiple parameters and criteria that enable the improvement of the quality of education for international students and the achievement of the best academic results. A successful adaptation process ensures that international students interact effectively with the sociocultural and intellectual environment of the higher education institution, achieve psycho-emotional stability, develop new personal qualities and social status, master new social roles, adopt new values, and comprehend the significance of the traditions of their future profession.
